Clearance Sacrifice

6 steps · Interactive

A clearance sacrifice is when you sacrifice a piece to open a line (file, rank, or diagonal) or free a square for another piece to use. The sacrificed piece removes itself to make way for a stronger move. The idea: your own piece is in the way of a winning plan. Sacrifice it -- often with a capture or check -- to clear the path.
