In-Between Check

An in-between check (zwischenschach) is a specific type of zwischenzug where the intermediate move is a check. Because check is the most forcing move in chess (the opponent MUST respond), an in-between check completely disrupts the expected flow of play. This tactic is devastatingly effective because it gains a free tempo by forcing the king to move.
