Key Squares

Key squares (critical squares) are specific squares that, if the attacking king reaches them, guarantee the pawn will promote regardless of the defender's play. For a pawn on the 5th rank or below, the key squares are the three squares TWO ranks ahead of the pawn. For example, a pawn on e4 has key squares d6, e6, and f6.
