King and Pawn vs King: The Basics

King and pawn versus king is the most fundamental endgame. The key principle: the attacking king must be IN FRONT of the pawn, not behind it. If the king reaches the 6th rank in front of the pawn, it wins. The defender must stay directly in front of the pawn and use opposition to hold the draw.
