Passed Pawns

A passed pawn is a pawn with no enemy pawns ahead of it on the same file or adjacent files. It has a clear path to promotion and forces the opponent to use pieces to stop it. As Aron Nimzowitsch said: 'A passed pawn is a criminal that must be kept under lock and key.'
