The Philidor Position

The Philidor Position is the most important defensive technique in rook endgames. When your opponent has a rook and pawn versus your rook, you can hold a draw by placing your rook on the 6th rank (3rd rank from your perspective) to prevent the enemy king from advancing. Once the pawn reaches the 6th rank, switch to back-rank checks.
