The Caro-Kann Defense

The Caro-Kann Defense (1.e4 c6) is one of the most solid responses to 1.e4. Like the French, Black prepares to challenge e4 with d5, but with c6 instead of e6. The key advantage: the light-squared bishop is never blocked. Named after Horatio Caro and Marcus Kann.
