The **Old Indian Defense** arises after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 d6. Black plans ...e5, building a compact structure with pawns on d6 and e5. Unlike the King's Indian (which fianchettoes on g7), the Old Indian keeps the bishop on the f8-a3 diagonal.
