When to Sacrifice Material

A sacrifice gives up material voluntarily to gain a different advantage: a mating attack, a dominant piece position, development lead, or initiative. Knowing WHEN to sacrifice separates good players from great ones. There are two types: tactical sacrifices (you have calculated a forced sequence that wins back more), and positional sacrifices (you get long-term compensation that is harder to calculate).
