The opening is the first phase of the game. Good opening play follows four golden principles: 1. Control the center (occupy or aim at e4, d4, e5, d5) 2. Develop your pieces (move knights and bishops off the back rank) 3. Castle early (tuck the king to safety) 4. Connect your rooks (once all minor pieces are developed)
